My friend, Deb, called me today and told me the bad news about the forecast - an impending winter storm with a foot of snow. I thought she was kidding to see if I was awake, but no such luck. The wind is coming straight out of the north and the snow is already starting.
Once again, we brought in all sixteen flats of plants from the greenhouse to be safe. The transplants are looking lovely enough that I really don't want to risk losing them so we put up with plants covering every horizontal space in the dining area and a good hunk of the kitchen.
I planted three tomato plants in the floor of the greenhouse a couple of weeks ago to see how they'd do during a cold snap. I got my answer last week when the temperature bottomed out at 11 degrees and all of the tomato plants succumbed. The lettuce I planted in the ground is doing fine, but it was simply too extreme for the tomatoes. Normally, I'd like to have several tomatoes in the Wall-O-Waters right now, but will wait until this latest storm is finished burying us.
