We were blessed with a couple of nice days on Friday and Saturday - the first days of spring - and despite a cold, I managed to spend a little time outside enjoying the change in weather.
On Friday, Sam, John and I sat in the greenhouse soaking up the rays and taking advantage of a short while in the fresh air. John slept in his carrier while I read, and Sam played with his little shovel and a few potting containers. The only reason it ended was because John needed to eat. Of course, Sam came in literally kicking and screaming.
Today Grant watched John while I watered the perennials and the spring bulbs. More than anything, winter dehydration is detrimental to the plants. They can handle the cold, and even the fluctuating temperatures, but the wind dries out the soil terribly. I should have watered more than a month ago during a warm day, but hopefully this will help.
The bulbs are coming up - with most popping through the soil at least three inches. It's good to see green of any sort, and I'm looking forward to color! Everything is so brown at this time of year. This year should be pretty since I planted over one hundred tulip and daffodil bulbs last fall. Of course, I was wet and muddy after watering when I came in to relieve Grant from watching John, which is my type of therapy.
I went out for less than a half an hour a second time to snag the weeds making an appearance. It's much easier when I stay on top of things, plus it's a good excuse to wallow around in the dirt! I was pleased to notice the golden currants are starting to leaf out. They took a pretty good beating being buried under that huge snow drift this winter, but overall I think they'll pull through just fine.
Some of my next projects include weeding the two new little flower beds, creating beds around the garden shed, and increasing the raspberry patch. Grant is going to bring in more stable materials for us soon, so hopefully I can get that squared away within the next month. The garden chore list is growing longer... finally!
